  • Tanker Demand Still Getting Tighter Says Ardmore Shipping CEO

The abundance of oil and the introduction of product coming out of new refineries in the Middle East are boosting tanker rates, said Anthony Gurnee, CEO of Ardmore Shipping. Gurnee added that exports from U.S. refineries in the Gulf of Mexico are up over 10% and are also boosting Ardmore's bottom line. After taking delivery of 4 vessels during the first quarter, Ardmore has an additional 6 vessels scheduled to enter service throughout the course of 2015, lifting its total to 24 total and increasing its revenue day run rate by 70% vs. 2014 levels. Finally, Gurnee said that higher volumes have resulted in port congestion globally, which increases ship demand even further as vessels are paid to wait offshore. It is now building capacity that appears will be mostly unneeded. These problems are real and significant, and largely beyond the power of any one company to address. But shipping...

Daily Voice News - Economic Collapse http://dailyvoicenews.com The hidden opportunity in Global shipping - Documentary The hidden opportunity in container shipping The container-shipping industry has been highly unprofitable over the past five years. Making things worse, earnings have been exceptionally volatile. Several factors are responsible, notably trade’s spotty recovery from the global financial crisis, and redoubled efforts by corporate customers to control costs. Some of the pain is self-inflicted: as in past cycles, the industry extrapolated the good times and foresaw an unsustainable rise in demand. It is now building capacity that appears will be mostly unneeded. These problems are real and significant, and largely beyond the power of any one company to address. But shipping companies cannot afford to throw up their hands and accept their fate. Hidden beneath these issues (and driving them to a degree) is another set of challenges that shipping lines can readily take on. Across the enterprise, in commercial, operations, and network and fleet activities, shipping lines have opportunities to improve performance. In sales, for example, carriers often confuse their costs with the value received by customers and fail to charge a premium for services for which shippers will pay more. In operations, many lines treat bunker as just another cost of doing business. In fact, fuel presents many opportunities, not just in procurement, but also in consumption. In network design, more than a few shipping companies use outmoded approaches to design their routes; new and more powerful systems use algorithms to make better, more effective decisions about networks. With a little bit here and a little bit there, companies that take on a full program of initiatives can boost earnings by as much as 10 to 20 percentage points—enough to reverse the recent trend, and return to profit. To realize that kind of upside, however, firms must also ready their organizations for change. That’s a nontrivial challenge: in many ways, very little has changed in container shipping since the first crane hoisted the first box in 1956. Companies need to find ways to help employees embrace new ways of working and must be prepared to bet on the future. Carriers that embrace change will be better prepared than their rivals to make the best of the current business cycle and to thrive in the next one. The industry’s bleak economics Transport is often seen as the harbinger of the broader economy. It certainly fulfilled that role in the recent economic crisis, as business fell off precipitously. However, shipping is now also a kind of lagging indicator: its performance is trailing the broader, somewhat erratic global recovery. A big part of the problem is that the industry continues to add capacity. By 2015, the typical vessel delivered will handle about 10,000 20-foot equivalent units (TEU), five times more than ships built in the 1990s. Not surprisingly, pressure to fill this capacity and capture the efficiency benefits of larger vessels has led to hasty decisions by carriers. In turn, profits have become exceptionally volatile. Record losses in 2009 were followed by strong profits in 2010―and significant losses again in 2011

Aground Megaship Pulled Free by a Dozen Tugboats - http://bit.ly/1TbdmXq International Shipping Industry in for a Decade-Long Recession? - http://bit.ly/1KdKgEb Hello and welcome to Universal Shipping News, where we ask, “What the freight is going on with international shipping?” I’m Jared Vineyard One of the world’s largest container ships ran aground in Germany’s Elbe River on its approach to the Port of Hamburg. The ship is the CSCL Indian Ocean. That’s right, the container ship is so big it’s named after a whole ocean. It’s longer than the Empire State Building is tall. That’s what she said. It’s really not the motion of the ocean, it’s the size of the ship. Ooh, it’s time for your ship is so big jokes. CSCL, your ship is so big when it sits around the port, it really sits around the port. Your ship is so big it can’t even get to the port because it gets stuck in the sand at the bottom of the water. Your ship is so big it takes the stars lining up to raise the tide and a dozen tugboats to get it back afloat. Actually, those last two are completely true. After being stuck for the better part of a week, the CSCL was pulled back afloat by 12 tugboats, made possible when the Earth lined up with the Sun and Moon, which raised the water level 1.2 meters above normal. The CSCL Indian Ocean has the capacity to carry over 19,100 twenty-foot equivalent units of shipping containers. Carriers are moving toward such megaships for the cost savings moving more containers in less voyages can provide, but imagine the loss and cost to shippers if something happened to even one ship of this size. It would be disastrous. Speaking of disastrous, the international shipping industry is in for a decade-long recession. That, according to A.P Moller Maersk, the world’s largest shipping company in terms of capacity. You’ve got to be freight and shipping me. One would hope Maersk is just overreacting to their $2.5 billion loss in the fourth quarter of 2015. Overcapacity, exasperated by all the new megaships, pushed down freight rates and hurt Maersk lines’ performance. The worldwide oil glut, pushing down oil prices, is causing Maersk Oil to fail to perform. Normally, the company’s diversification between cargo shipping and oil makes Maersk more stable than a carrier would normally be. But Maersk does in depth industry study and analysis that makes people stop and listen when the industry leader says international shipping could be swept up in a decade long recession. If this is true, shippers can expect the field of carriers competing in the international shipping industry to shrink even more than it already has with alliances, mergers, and buyouts. Uno Bryfors, Senior Vice President of ABB Ports, presents his view on how and why the container handling industry is changing. In the first part of his interview on the London Eye, Bryfors explains what the future will hold after the major container shipping developments of 2017. Bryfors is one of the most experienced professionals in the ports industry today. During his career of more than three decades at ABB he has been driving the development of automation solutions for cargo handling. Watch another PTI video interview with Bryfors, filmed in 2014, where he accurately made forecasts on why the number of ship calls at ports would fall: http://bit.ly/2I4IsOk Video transcript: “2017 was the year of change in container shipping. What is now the impact on the container handling industry? I believe the main factors are mega-sizing, consolidation, and terminal volumes. It is important to keep an eye on the industry. We are now in the mega-age. We are talking about mega-container lines, -alliances, -ships, -ports, -terminals and cranes. The main mega driver is containerships. They are now getting very big relative to most trades. The alliances have been handling this so far, but the shippers require decent frequencies, so we are coming to the limit. By gradual optimization of ship designs, more TEUs have been squeezed into more or less the same overall dimensions. But if exceeding the new triple 24 by 24 base, the 24 wide and 12 plus 12 high, we will see that big investments are required in the whole transport system. While the shipping line consolidation has come very far by now, but not reached the limit, terminal consolidation has not really taken off. Terminal consolidation will take time as it is more on regional and local level. This will be seen as a shake out of terminals which are less productive, having higher cost per container and less capacity. The question is this is going to be handled by the terminal operators or be driven by the shipping lines and shippers. Digitalization ties container logistics much tighter now to the global logistics environment. It’s really not so special anymore. In worldwide logistics, consolidation is driven by big shippers like retailers, ecommerce and big manufacturers. In one-and-a-half years, we can see container volumes increasing and the automated terminals are growing and taking market share. Terminals will be forced to be on their toes accepting a lower number of calls by bigger ships and requiring higher peak capacity and still with less money per move. This is felt especially just now as we’ve seen more deliveries of large ships than ever before and this means cascading of 13-16,000 TEU ships into several new trades. The result will be less terminals but bigger and much more automated. Terminal operators are more cautious today, are more focusing on investing in existing terminals, optimizing them instead of investing in greenfield projects. We are at the age of expansion and re-equipment. Most of the terminals in operation today will be in operation 20 years from now. Terminals are expanded by adding more land, by taking out non-core activities and also by merging with their neighbours. Bigger calls means that yard capacity and especially density must increase and this is achieved by replacing RTGs and straddle carriers by automatic stacking cranes, so re-equipping terminals is not just by bigger ship to shore cranes, but also much bigger and automated and intermodal yard cranes.” Get more PTI: Official Site: http://bit.ly/PortTechOfficial Facebook: http://bit.ly/FBPortTech Twitter: http://bit.ly/PortTechTwitter LinkedIn: http://bit.ly/PortTechLinkedIn Published four times a year, Port Technology is the only technical journal reviewing and previewing advanced technologies for ports and terminals across the globe. A new insurance industry report highlights the growing security and safety risks the shipping industry faces – from cyber attacks to piracy and super storms – and warns that shippers should be better prepared to handle these exposures. This report comes on the heels that 2015 was the safest year for the maritime industry in 10 years. Cyber Threats As ship owners and ports undertake the digitalization of their operations for greater efficiencies and growth, the risk of cyber threats is on the rise. Computerized systems are used for everything from navigation to container inspections, tracking and managing transit, and handling and release of cargo as well as terminal operations. While these smart ships and ports garner many benefits, they also open up the maritime industry to cyber attacks. Moreover, because global maritime logistics is highly integrated, it’s possible for a company in the supply chain to become a victim without having been the target. In fact, concern over cyber security in the shipping industry is a top-of-mind issue on the agenda of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Facilitation and Maritime Safety Committees. According to the IMO, both committees are working collaboratively in the development of voluntary guidelines on adequate anti-cyber security practices, which may be used to protect and enhance the resilience of automated systems supporting the operations of ports, vessels, marine facilities and other elements of the maritime transportation system. Indeed, the 96th session of the IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee taking place in London next month will be reviewing cyber security proposals that were presented last year. Meanwhile, in January a group of international shipping organizations, which included Cruise Lines International Association, Intercargo, Intertanko and the International Chamber of Shipping, released guidelines to help shipping companies prevent cyber attacks. The group’s guidelines to lower cyber security risks include: how to raise awareness of safety and commercial risks to shipping if no guidelines are in place; how to protect IT infrastructure and connected equipment; how to make sure users have appropriate access to information; and how to protect data flowing between the ship and shore-side offices. Piracy Piracy also remains an issue for the maritime industry with attempted pirate attacks on ships having moved from Somalia as a primary focus to Southeast Asia. According to the Singapore-based Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP), 183 actual or attempted attacks took place in Southeast Asian waters during 2014. This figure represents a marked increase from 150 in 2013 and 133 in 2012, and is the highest since 2006. The latest figures released by the International Maritime Bureau’s (IMB) Piracy Reporting Center corroborate ReCAAP’s findings and show a similar increase in attacks in 2013 and 2014. Since a total of 245 attacks took place worldwide in 2014, Asia now accounts for up to 75% of all piracy and armed robbery (PAR) incidents in the world, up from 60% in 2013. Additionally, concerns have been raised over the fact that pirates are beginning to identify vulnerabilities in cyber defenses. Extreme Weather Conditions In the last year, three of the five largest vessels lost were due to bad weather. Exceptional weather events are becoming more commonplace, bringing additional risks and disruption to supply chains. The most recent loss was the El Faro, which sunk as it approached the Bahamas en-route from Florida to San Juan, Puerto Rico during Hurricane Joaquin, and killed 33 crew members. Roanoke Trade specializes in insuring transportation and logistic service providers – from providing coverage for cargo loss to offering cyber liability insurance.
